August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day, a day to advocate for ending drug overdoses and remember those who we have lost. It is also a time to remind those who currently use drugs or are in recovery that they are valued.
You can honor International Overdose Awareness Day by learning about its history and exploring helpful tools and resources.
If you or someone you know is dealing with substance-abuse, here are some ways you can help:
- Talk to them about the risks of drug use, like heart disease, mental health conditions or death.
- Globally, more than 100,000 people die from drug overdoses each year. Learn how to recognize an overdose and possibly save a life.
- Explore these AECOM resources:
- Learn how to better understand, cope and help a loved one who is struggling with addiction with the Understanding Addictive Behaviors
- Get free and confidential support 24/7 through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), including information on addition, access to counseling services and other resources that can help.
- Supporting a struggling loved one, or yourself, can take a toll on your mental well-being. Take action to strengthen your own resilience with Koa Care 360.
- Speak with a Mental Health Ally — a specially trained AECOM colleague who can connect you with helpful resources or just provide an ear to listen.
