August 19 marks World Humanitarian Day — a day to honor aid workers around the world who provide life-saving assistance to people affected by global crises.
World Humanitarian Day was established in 2009 to pay tribute to the 22 United Nations (UN) and relief agency staff.
This year’s campaign theme is “The Human Race” and focuses on bringing people together to share inspiring humanitarian stories from the COVID-19 pandemic using the hashtag #RealLifeHeroes.
In honor of World Humanitarian Day, here are some activities you can do:
- Donate.
There are a number of relief centers and programs around that world, such as Water for People and Engineers Without Borders, that are always in need of funds, donated items or volunteers. - Help out in your community.
Volunteer at a homeless shelter, hospital or place that serves underprivileged children. Check out VolunteerMatch to find opportunities near you. - Reach out to your leaders.
Contact your local officials and ask them to commit to help support humanitarian causes in your area. - Teach your children about human rights.
Take time to teach your children about the rights and responsibilities we share as human beings. Check out these kid-friendly activities you can do together.
