Focus on Yourself on International Self-Care Day

On July 24, we celebrate International Self-Care Day – bringing awareness to the importance of good physical and emotional well-being. It reminds us to commit to our well-being, so we can fully show up in our lives and positively impact those around us.

Started by the International Self-Care Foundation, this day brings awareness to the habits and activities that promote self-nurturing, healthy lifestyles and personal growth. This year’s theme is centered around resilience. Prioritizing self-care helps us recover quickly from difficulties and withstand challenges.

In honor of International Self-Care Day, here are four tips to help you embrace self-care and build resilience:

    1. Rest your body and your mind
      In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to keep moving from one thing to the next. Setting aside time each day unwind and relax will help you feel more balanced and rejuvenated. Try doing a digital detox, take a walk in nature or practice meditation.
    2. Nurture yourself
      Choosing healthy habits helps you feel your best. Discover a new favorite food with the Brain Foods Bingo Card, boost your sleep and schedule regular check-ups with your doctor.
    3. Create positive connections
      Spend time with others who inspire you and support you. Building healthy relationships is a strong predictor of physical and mental health too.
    4. Mindfulness matters

    In my 12 step wellness recovery program, I focus on specific well-being tools, such as one day at a time, Easy Does It, reaching out to a friend, pausing and meditating before reacting, writing, and giving it back to someone in need.

  2. I reserve an hour before bedtime to relax without my phone or computer. I talk to a friend and family member every day, and make at least a little time each day for something I enjoy and look forward to.
