Earth Day is our annual opportunity to look at the impact we are leaving on our communities and our planet. At AECOM, we celebrate planet well-being by continuing to progress toward our goal of science-based net zero by 2040 and work to reduce the carbon imprint of major projects by at least 50%. By working together, we can make a positive difference on our planet and create a brighter future for ourselves and future generations.

This year, the theme for Mother Earth Day is “Invest in Our Planet” – calling us all to do our part by investing in a green economy. While this is a global effort, there are small steps we can take in our daily lives that make an impact, such as biking or carpooling to work, eating less meat, wearing sustainable clothing and conserving water and electricity in our homes.

Only by working together can we achieve our goal of delivering a better world.

“It is our collective and individual responsibility to protect and nurture the global family, to support its weaker members and to preserve and tend to the environment in which we all live.” — Dalai Lama

  1. Teaching children about the importance of the ecosystems that surround them helps build an improved appreciation for protecting and investing in our planet. While traveling recently, we visited the Green Cay Nature Center in Florida that overlooks 100 acres of constructed wetlands and provides educational opportunities and interpretive signs about the habitat. Lots of questions got asked and we talked about the interconnectedness of the plants, animals, humans, etc. and the impact we can have on them, both positive and negative.

  2. The Cleveland office will be celebrating Earth Day by giving out packets of seeds for Native Plants local to Northeast Ohio. I will also be sharing seedlings from my own Native Plant Backyard Garden! Native Plants support local ecosystems by providing food and habitat for native pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. Since 2020 I’ve documented nearly 200 species of insects, spiders, birds, mammals, and even an amphibian in my tiny, urban, backyard habitat in the middle of Cleveland. Even a small garden or a balcony/patio can make a difference when you’re adding native plants to the local ecosystem!

  3. Trees are our friends; these in my back yard are native pecans, so they help convert CO2 and provide a food source. I keep them well maintained for maximum leaf coverage and crop yield.

We invest in our planet by growing some of our own food. This photo shows our daughter with some of the “baby” blueberries.

  5. Public transit in the suburban midwestern US takes some planning to navigate. My son (who attends university just a few miles north of the Cincinnati AECOM office) and I have committed to commute (20 miles each way) from our outlying suburb together by bus. It saves money and reduces our carbon footprint!

Solar energy can be used to replace the use of other energy sources in your home. This minimizes the quantity of electricity, gas, and oil you consume each billing period, resulting in cheaper monthly bills. Using solar energy might also help safeguard you against growing fuel expenses.
I am using 5KW Solar Panel at my home and going totally off grid during daytime. Even selling back some excess portion of electricity to the Govt each month.

  7. I protect Mother Nature by cleaning up my local mountain trails with friends, so everyone can enjoy the beautiful California poppy super blooms.

  8. I am helping to save the planet by riding my bike to and from the office. It is not easy. I live in another county and the round-trip distance is 50 miles. But it allows me the opportunity to log many more training miles than I would otherwise have time to do. I arrive at the office feeling very invigorated, and the sunrise is often spectacular!

The Sacramento, California office has an average of five daily bike commuters, including myself. On this day, the bike lock-up in the office basement was particularly full! Proud of all bike commuters who are doing their part everyday to reduce carbon emissions and increase their overall health.
