Ways to Raise Awareness of Mental Health

Help spread awareness and start healthy conversations about mental health in your community.

As mental health conditions are on the rise globally, one of the most important ways you can help spread awareness is by having healthy conversations about mental well-being at home, at work and in your community. More than ever, we all can play a positive role in normalizing, supporting, educating and providing resources around mental health.

There are many ways you can shine a spotlight on helpful mental health resources, information and content to your family, friends, colleagues and networks. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

Host a book club: Coordinate a book selection about mental health with friends or for your organization (such as “Turtles All the Way Down” by Jon Green; “On Edge: A Journey Through Anxiety” by Andrea Petersen; “Crazy Is My Superpower” by AJ Mendez Brooks). Then host a conversation to talk about it. Consider inviting a subject matter expert to moderate or ask for facilitation questions to help guide the discussion.

Participate in a walk or run: Around the world, many mental health charities organize walks and runs to build a sense of community and promote exercise, while also raising awareness for mental health initiatives. Search for opportunities in your area to show your support and get in some extra steps too.

Be a positive advocate: Use your voice to promote programs, resources or support groups from leading mental health organizations in your area. Look for opportunities to get the word out to your community or network through social media or other outreach efforts.

Educate yourself: Take time to familiarize yourself with the many tools and resources available to support your own mental well-being or the needs of people in your life.
