International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed on August 9 each year to raise awareness and respect the rights of the 476 million indigenous peoples in the world living in 90 countries around the world. Indigenous peoples speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures.
The observance also recognizes the achievements and contributions that indigenous peoples make to improve the world.
