An estimated 1.3 billion people worldwide experience significant disability — this represents 16% of the world’s population1.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD) was designated by the United Nations in 1992 to celebrate people living with a disability every year on December 3. IDPWD was founded to bring awareness to the importance of inclusivity, accessibility and equal opportunities for people with disabilities, and to also celebrate the achievements and contributions to society.
Here are some ideas you can do to support the disabled community in honor of IDPWD:
- Educate yourself on the various types of disabilities, including those that may not be immediately apparent to others.
- Explore the disability laws and acts in your country that have been put in place to do stop discrimination against people with disabilities and protect their rights.
- Find out how you can become a better ally to your coworkers who may be living with a disability.
- Learn about the various benefits and well-being resources AECOM provides to support our colleagues with disabilities or visit WellBeingatAECOM.com to find the specific disability benefits available to you. Click on your country from the Benefits dropdown menu at the top of the page.
