Celebrated on June 5 each year, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is led by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Across the globe, people take steps to address plastic pollution and promote sustainability to protect and restore our planet.
This year’s theme is #BeatPlasticPollution, highlighting the serious issue of plastic pollution. With more than 400 million tons of plastic produced annually, plastics account for 85% of marine waste. According to the United Nations, an estimated 19-23 million tons of plastic end up in lakes, rivers and seas every year. (That’s about the weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers!)
In honor of World Environment Day, check out these tips to use less plastic in your day-to-day:
- Ditch the plastic straws and use a stainless steel or glass straw instead.
- Shop with reusable produce and shopping bags. Did you know a single use plastic bag can take 1,000 years to degrade?
- Make a habit of recycling.
- Create a Healthy by Habit plan to live sustainably.
- Reuse your containers to store leftovers or packing lunch in.
- Reduce your plastic use, meet your hydration goals and give back to a community in need all at the same time with the Fill it Forward
- Get your kids involved in recycling with these six fun activities.
