Celebrated on December 10, Human Rights Day was founded to commemorate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations in 1945. This declaration lays out the fundamental rights and freedoms to which all of us are entitled, regardless of race, nationality, gender, religion, language or any other status.
The 2023 theme for Human Rights Day is “Dignity, Freedom and Justice for All.” While the world has continued to expand the system of human rights protection since the inception of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, new and ongoing challenges threaten to hinder that progress. This year’s theme brings universal awareness to the Declaration and promotes activism.
Here are some ideas you can do to celebrate Human Rights Day and help promote awareness:
- Read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Declaration is available in more than 500 languages and is the most translated document in the world. It has led to the adoption of more than seventy human rights treaties at global and regional levels.1
- Teach your kids about human rights with these activity ideas you can do as a family.
- Volunteer at a local human rights organization, such as a food bank, homeless shelter or free medical clinic.
- Join the Write for Rights campaign and write a letter on behalf of those whose human rights are being violated.
- Learn about AECOM’s initiatives to improve social outcomes through the Environmental, Social and Governance strategy and their Blueprint for a Better World.
