Tips to Build Better Resilience

Resilience isn’t something you either have or lack. Just like building muscle, we can train ourselves to become more resilient with time and intention. The more resilient we are, the better we can manage, and even grow from, difficult and unfamiliar situations.

Here are some ways to build resilience to improve your well-being and thrive.

  1. Challenge yourself. Seek out new opportunities to learn and grow, especially if they take you out of your comfort zone. If you fear public speaking, complete the Improve your Presentation Skills Healthy by Habit plan and then find an opportunity to use your new skills by presenting to an audience.
  2. Practice forgiveness. Learn to forgive others who may have hurt or offended you. Forgive yourself as well, and learn to trade in self-criticism for self-compassion.
  3. Develop a strong support network. Build a support system around you and be willing to ask for help and guidance during difficult times. Considering joining one of AECOM’s Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). Plus, learn how the GuidanceResources EAP can help if you are going through a challenging time or experiencing stress or anxiety.
  4. Teach yourself to relax. Try the Learn to Relax Healthy by Habit plan to help you manage stress, which is an important strengthening your resilience.
  5. Practice mindfulness meditation. Follow along with this meditation video, explore guided sessions on apps like Calm, or just take a couple minutes on your own to practice breathing and get centered.
