I like to think that we get to see the true nature of people when they are facing difficulties in life, or forced to make quick decisions. Since the pandemic started, I have seen amazing and positive reactions from our people at AECOM; the sense of community and caring has sprung strongly and  it’s not unusual seeing people going the extra mile for other colleagues. For that, I feel proud of being part of our organization and I would like to thank each and every one of you for not only taking care of yourselves but doing so with your colleagues. Please keep that spirit and don’t forget there are colleagues around the globe ready to support you.

As we look back over the last 2 years, what is it we see?

For me and my family it was a jam packed calendar every day of the week, both of us working, two kids in grade school, plus hockey, sleepovers, swimming, etc.  As a family we love going to the lake on the weekend, having various different friends and families come to stay with us over the summer months.  Not to mention having that one day a week where our larger family got together for a meal, game or to enjoy an outing together.  There never seemed to be enough minutes in the day to fit it all in.

As we look back over the last couple months and into what the next few will hold, things look a little different…

We have all transitioned in one way or another into a new normal.  A great percentage of us have transitioned to working from home, some of us have had to learn how to manage our jobs plus learn how to be a teacher for our children or a caregiver to our aging family members. Those jam packed calendars are…blank.  The overall shift in life has been a major adjustment.  For me, I have always found myself digging into any new challenge, charging ahead without taking time to assess the change or impact to my mind, body, family, friends or community.  Potentially many of you could also be charging ahead without taking inventory on those same very things: mind, body, family/friends/community.

I challenge you to take an inventory, how are you actually doing? Are you finding time for you? Maybe you are spending too much time alone, can you schedule time to socialize?  Setup a Teams Meeting to have coffee with those you used to run into in the coffee room at the office.  Such a great health break for you and an opportunity to ask “How are you doing? Get a real feel for how they are coping.   Those of us with kids or elderly at home, it is equally as important to teach them how to take this same inventory.  How are they reaching out to their social circles? Socialization has taken on a new form without playgrounds for the little ones or a game of cards or afternoon coffee for those older folks.  How can we help keep the mental health of our loved ones in a positive space as well?

Individually we are all adaptable and strong beings; together we adapt at greater speeds and are significantly stronger.  We need to support each other, share our individual coping mechanisms as your method may spark an idea within someone who is struggling.  I encourage each of you to start your conversations with a genuine “How are you?” “How is the family?” We never know the full lengths of what someone else may be going through and this simple gesture could be exactly what they need to make them stronger.

Our health is most likely the most precious thing we have on earth. It includes physical, mental, and well-being aspects. For example, mandatory slowing down and experiencing less stress reminds us of the importance of it. We should take care of our good health and a program like Freedom to Grow can help us doing so.

During a lock-down, where we consume less, we do not travel and stay at home, we directly see the positive impact on our ecosystem, for instance a better air quality, increasing fish populations in our oceans, etc. We are a part of nature and need it around us to feel well.

Now is a great time to think about changing habits in a sustainable way and preserve our planet for future generations.

On a day-to-day basis well-being has always been a key consideration for me, however during the current period where we have found ourselves living and working in a way that is very different to what we are used to, the focus on the well-being of my team, myself and those around me has become more important than ever.

Previously I would have said that the physical and emotional well-being pillars were those that I resonated with the most, however over the last 6 weeks I have truly come to appreciate the power of being socially connected – something that I, and perhaps many others, took for granted before.

Not being able to see family, friends or colleagues in person; not being able to take that weekend away that you’d planned; not being able to celebrate a relative or colleague’s special anniversary face to face is really tough, and does have an impact on all of us emotionally.

As a community, the most important thing we can do is look for opportunities to stay connected with those around us and offer support whenever possible. Something as simple as a 30 minute virtual coffee catch up, a regular team get-together where everyone dials in by video to talk about a particular topic which could be work or non-work-related, a daily check-in via Teams or over the phone with a direct report or colleague, or even just sending some kind or inspiring words for the day ahead over text or email message can make a huge difference to someone’s day, and help them to face the challenges ahead.

I am incredibly passionate about our team’s well-being and will do all I can to support our people in their drive to live a happy and healthy life and enjoy their time working at AECOM. I achieve my well-being by being active and having quality, uninterrupted family time. I need to be better at creating me time and space for thinking. I am working on this and would encourage others to do the same!

Also, don’t feel guilty when you are focusing on one area! A key quote I heard from a client who in turn had taken it from a film a few years ago was “Have courage and be kind.” For me this means seeking and providing support or advice when needed.

Our world has been shaken up and the way we see the future is forever changed. It is hard to realize, accept and deal with that reality. We all have our coping mechanisms, but now they may not work anymore or are simply not feasible.

We are here to help you with resources and tools and examples of how others are getting through this. This pandemic brings us all together, and teaches us to be humble, compassionate and grateful for what we do have. Reflect at the end of every day how you have expressed those 3 feelings to yourself and others. Be kind!

Upon closing in on my 40th birthday a few years ago, I observed many colleagues participated in activities which appeared to be adventurous, athletic and even impossible to a ‘normal’ person like myself. These colleagues participated in activities like trail running, mountain biking and swimming. I dared to dream that I could also compete in these events and entered a 5km trail run. I completed the trail run with no prior practice along many other ‘normal’ looking people and the odd ‘super’ athlete in-between. The knowledge that I too could participate with some experienced athletes made me feel good and I continued to enter these events every weekend. Before long the bug had bitten and I started to run more often, in order to become fit and avoid having sore legs and knees.

The challenge of running a bit further and a bit quicker, made me feel alive, especially when running in nature trails. The adrenaline released due to achieving goals, which is not often available in our rat-race lives, made me feel better than I had in a long time. My running goals continued to grow. I increased my distances from 5km, to 10km and then 21km in intervals of 3 months. I was able to run my 1st marathon (42.2 km) within 12 months of starting to run and I have completed a further 6 marathons in the 12 months thereafter.

My body has improved due to losing 5kg in weight and I have the benefit of having stronger legs and a more toned upper body. The major benefit has been the confidence boost achieved every time a running challenge is achieved, whether reaching the top of a hill or completing a ‘quick’ 5 km run. Upon completing a run challenge, the guaranteed rush of achievement fills your body and makes you feel like a million dollars.

I highly recommend that everybody will benefit by running, as the physical and mental benefits improved my quality of life and enhanced my circle of friends. I have become closer to nature and now enjoy sunrises, animal life and the beauty of nature while running, which I missed while being a coach potato.

We all are witness to such unpreceded times globally which a few months ago, no one could have imagined in our wildest of imaginations. No one globally is spared of the current situation and its impact either big or small.   This has brought everyone to the same level playing field irrespective of their stature being rich or poor, race, gender, ethnicity, or age. During these times, with the barrage of information on the 24×7 news channels, social media and numerous other sources of information, it is natural to get anxious, concerned, and worried for ourselves and our loved one’s well-being.

As we look around, we also come across great stories of empathy, care, dedication, self-less duty, and love across the globe which motivates us to fight with the huge challenge and the assurance that one day we will overcome this pandemic.   Governments are doing their bit everywhere, but it is the sacrifice of the individuals such as doctors and health workers, police and local administration, armed forces etc. which stands out in such trying times.   We all can make a huge difference however seemingly small may be our contribution to fight this in our own way. There have been examples like contributing to the NGOs for providing food/relief material to the poor families, helping your own help providers, staying connected with your colleagues sometimes just to check on their well-being, connecting with old friends etc.  Some of these have given me such a great feeling which is difficult to express in words. However, the message is clear that we all are in it together and this is the only way that we can come out of this.

Hi, my name is Sean McGovern and I am the Head of Safety Health and Environment for Civil Infrastructure in the United Kingdom and Ireland. I was asked to contribute by becoming a Well-Being Ambassador and contributing a video, audio or written piece. I don’t have the accent for video or audio so here are my thoughts:

What does well-being mean to me? Well it’s not surprising that being in a safety role that I believe that well-being is important – is it really any different from safety? It’s absolutely critical that we look after all aspects of our employees, colleagues (and in many cases friends,) health and well-being. For me it’s pointless putting huge efforts into keeping our employees safe from physical hazards if we ignore the other aspects of well-being. Safety (or well-being) isn’t just about meeting legal requirements, it’s about ensuring that our people can perform excellently. Every organisation makes statements about how they care about employees, I want AECOM to do more than just say it, to really show our people that we do care and that the health, be it physical or mental, is important to us and that our culture of caring is explicitly demonstrated. I have seen some amazing examples of engagement with staff during this difficult social isolation period, as this becomes more ‘normal’ please ensure that this doesn’t slip, that we keep showing that we care.

Where you see something great – call it out and recognise excellence. This doesn’t always have to be formal, often just a thank-you has more impact. Please take 5 minutes and think of someone who has done something memorable over the last few weeks and drop them a note to say thanks – you may be surprised at the impact and response.

Our physical and mental well-being has never been more important than it is right now.  Personally, I’ve always found exercise as a way to manage stress, unwind, and sharpen my focus.  What gets scheduled gets done; block time in your calendar to meditate, walk, run, bike or join an online training session.  This pandemic is not something we should simply endure, we should use it to find new growth, explore new ideas, and find new ways to reconnect with our well-being. Challenge your co-workers, create a competition amongst your friends, and hold each other accountable.  Most importantly have fun, laugh, and enjoy this unique opportunity to reconnect with yourself.

With the vast majority of our business in Continental Europe now working remotely, it is essential that we stay connected with our teams and check in regularly on their well-being. We have found as a leadership team that using the video function on Teams has helped with this tremendously. Seeing everyone regularly face to face, and importantly how they are reacting and feeling, has helped with both engagement and ensuring the well-being of the team. I have also introduced video calls with my own teams, and start each meeting with a well-being moment to check that they are safe and well both mentally and physically.

While working remotely I have made a number of changes to my working day to safeguard my own well-being such as taking breaks from work. The highlight of my day is spending time with my 18 month old daughter and going on a long walk together – weather permitting in the UK! We have also made a number of small changes to our lifestyle to act more sustainably. One example is that all our fruit and vegetables are being sourced from a company that saves produce that has been rejected by supermarkets and would have gone to waste.
