It is easy to get super focused on your daily work. I find myself moving between meetings and tasks that are scheduled back-to-back. Although I book “focus” time on my calendar, I was using it to catch up on emails or missed messages. I live near the beach in Florida. I always pick up plastics and other debris during my long walks on the beach. As someone who feels the most at peace when in nature, it pains me to see the evidence of the harm we are doing to our planet. Few things compare to the immensity and power of the sea, the beauty of the sun rising over the water, the pleasure of swimming in water so clean that I can see I can see my toes and all the glistening small fish scurrying around my feet. It is because of my love for nature that I do not drink bottled water (instead I filter my own), that I have limited my consumption of animal protein over time, and that I hug trees with abandon when no one is looking 🙂 Change is built one person at a time, join me in making small changes that collectively will have a larger impact on this beautiful blue planet we call home.

In case anyone was not aware there are cancer screening home test kits available through our AECOM MyFlex benefits portal (I am in the UK not sure about global availability). The kits are sent to you at home and you do a finger prick test that you then send them off and wait for your results back.
I have just done mine yesterday (I have the bruised fingers to testify to that) and it is very easy to do and will hopefully give me and my family a little piece of mind so if something is detected then it will be detected early and we will be able to get the necessary treatment.
Cancer screening i.e. hospital tests etc is also available through our UK Private Medical Insurance self referral pathways. (see the policy document on MyFlex)

As with most things there is more help out there than you first realise, that first step is always about asking for the help to start with.

Many years ago (pre marriage, pre kids) I used to squeeze into the cramped corners of local cafe’s in the Blue Mountains where I grew up to play cover songs on my guitar for tips and free food. It was an interesting time of personal grown for me given that I saw myself as a rather shy and reserved person. Playing music in front of strangers forced me out of my comfort zone and taught me to push through the butterflies in the stomach and to give things a solid go, even when you don’t know how things will work out.

Fast forward 15 years to November 2020. Sydney has just come out of months of hard COVID-19 lockdown. We are all desperate for re-connection with our friends, family and colleagues. The annual Christmas Party is approaching for our team and we are struggling to pitch ideas for a fun and engaging “COVID-safe” event that will tick all the approval boxes. After not playing music in front of people for over a decade, I put my hand up to dust off the old guitar and volunteered to play some music for our 50-person strong team. Once the offer was accepted, I was immediately racked by that old self doubt. What was I thinking? Was this going to damage my social standing with my peers and the way they look at me? Will it be a disaster? The words of my musical Hero (G. Love) filled my ears with “Always say yes to the gig”. Forcing all of those feelings and doubts aside I pushed ahead and gave it my best on the night. All those doubts and fears were laid to rest as the team was so warm and welcoming. The moment I played those first chords and sang the first verse the fears evaporated, the nervous shakes stopped and I could enjoy being in the moment. We all had a fantastic night filled with laughs that will hopefully be remembered fondly.

Having the opportunity to give back to the team in this manner filled me with happiness in a way that I hadn’t expected and reignited my love of playing music. A couple of months after the party, I decided to form a band and at our first gig in a shady whisky bar in Sydney in early 2021, the WHOLE VENUE was booked out and filled with the smiling faces of our AECOM crew. Every time I think back to this moment it fills me with happiness and refills my cup. The overwhelming gratitude I feel towards my friends and colleagues at AECOM motivates me to be a better Team Leader, Project Manager and all round Human Being.

The second wave of the pandemic had a massive impact on my emotional wellbeing, I lost both my parents in a span of 3 days back in April 2021. For almost a year, following the tragic event, I and my family were having very low motivation to do anything. Fast-forward to April 2022, I had gained 10kgs of weight and was “overweight” per the BMI index, my BP and sugar levels were impacted and I thought to myself that I need to take care of myself and my family and decided to improve my physical fitness. I started with 3km jogging every day on April 22 and stopped eating all things sugar and fried items. I was able to reduce 8kgs in 4 months. I have enclosed a pic of my running circuit comparing April 22(when I was overweight) and Aug 22 how losing weight has improved my overall speed, but the overall impact of being physically was that my BP and sugar level are back to normal, and I sleep better which improved my emotional well-being. Life throws many challenges that sometimes will impact us in many aspects, we need to find the motivation to keep going forward and enjoy the time with our loved ones.

My mom made some of the reusable bags I use for shopping (other can be purchased at any supermarket). The story is I started making those small steps several years ago, to reduce plastic and one time use items. I asked my mom to make 1-2 bags I could use for vegetables and fruits (she is great at sewing). Now I use them for every shopping I do. I normally shop prepared – with a list and reusable bags taken from home, so I don’t bring unnecessary plastic bags home (even the biodegradable ones aren’t really this good, to possibly biodegrade they would need appropriate conditions and not be just thrown as other plastic bags).

Also at home I often use reused glass jars to store beans, seeds, pasta, flour etc. They protect food well and I can see how much is left. This helps to organize it.

It would be hard to implement many changes all at once but slowly reducing and exchanging the things is really possible. The bags and jars are just one example. While we can’t avoid plastic packaging everywhere – just limiting it makes a huge difference. I encourage you to start with 1-2 bags or a jar 🙂

Afterwards over the years I also started to use washable rags in the kitchen and bathroom, make-up removal cotton pads, reusable coffee cup and water bottle – but this all started with little first steps.

ERGs – Employee Research Groups

I have recently joined the Pride Europe ERG and I cannot tell you how useful it has been being part of that group. We have a child who is just finding their feet in the LGBTQI+ community and as such we were keen to learn as much ourselves how to best to support our child. Through the ERG I have been able to seek advice directly from other parents who are dealing with the same issues we are and I cannot tell you how invaluable that is.
Just being able to ask questions in that environment has been priceless to us and it is my hope that I too can pass on any advice in the future to other parents as well.

From a business aspect I am also confident that as an ally I am in a position to support my fellow AECOM employees should the need arise.

The ERGs cover many subjects and help bring together ideas and values. They are a great way for anyone to get involved for social reasons or even to try and contribute to the way the company as a whole approaches certain objectives.

Couple of years back There were months/ years in my life where I felt very insecure about everything, like my job, my carrier, My relationship, my physical appearance, and more. Those emotions, feeling led to anxiety and sort of frustration in everything I do. My confidence levels crushed to dust, because of my thoughts. i was so hard on myself, I started to feel guilty of everything.. if i smile or be more happy i felt like i am doing something wrong.. tip of ice berg, i started to doubt and start feel guilty on my parenting skills. I felt that I am not there 100% for my kids. , yet, i cooked my kids hot fresh meals every day, gave healthy snack to schools, I drop them to schools, extra curricular activities provided them with good cloths, taking care of their hygiene, teaching them good habits, manners, discipline.., , and more while and working a full time job with no extra help. I was so hard on myself, I work 10 times harder, at least that’s what I felt at that time. I am become a more angrier person. Every one start to notice and ask me “why I am so sad, or why I am so angry looking” when i am actually not sad or angry.. I was a person who enjoy all sort of small moments and happiness. but in those periods, smiling for small moments reduced drastically. Instead I started to worry, what will they think… In those periods. At one point when my kids notice and they start to adjust to my temperament , I broke down and said to my self enough is enough, and decided to heal and come out of my non existence shell. I started to read more positive quotes, I came across Jay Shetty’s speech, Sadguru speech, TED talks which kind of slightly brings my confidence back. I stat to realize change has to happen from me and with in me. I started to accept myself, I learnt self Affirmation in the mornings gives hope and positive vibes which can set the tone for that day. This worked on me . I am not saying this is the only step but this also one of the step i took in come out of my zone. so sharing my small first first for Anyone feeling or going thru any sort of insecurities in life. Please say this every morning before or after getting ready to work or you day . actually you can say whenever you fell so low. ( I did ) .. “I am Strong, I am Beautiful, I am Able, I am kind, I can do this, I am Brave, I am not less than anyone , No one is less than me, Happiness Comes from my thoughts, I will keep my thoughts as happy as possible, I will give my 100% to make this day Very productive, meaningful , purposeful and a happy day” and things you want to achieve in presentence , These self affirmations give some positive thoughts vibes and give some hope for a better change. I am happy now. I am back myself now. Hope some one can benefit from story and can start their small first step as well.

How to prevent food waste

My boyfriend often laughs with me because, when I go to a store, I need one thing and come back with a bag full of items that are about to expire the same day. I’m against food waste and cannot see food being thrown away.

One third of all the food that is produced for human consumption is wasted. When we waste food, we waste all the resources that go into producing and transporting the food, such as land, water and fuel use, without gaining any of the benefits of feeding people.

With this in mind, I would like to highlight the difference between products that say ‘best before’ and ‘use by’:
– ‘best before’: refers to food quality, foods can often be eaten after this date, for example eggs, grains, pasta,… If the food has lost its crispness and firmness, maybe it can be repurposed and used for something else?
– ‘use by’: refers to food safety, foods should NOT be eaten after this date. If you think you’re unable to eat the food before this day -> freeze it. Sometimes food can also be bought cheaper when it’s very close to it’s use by date. That can be a great opportunity to save both money and food!

True, those 2 are often misunderstood. We should use our senses and judge the products by look and smell rather than throw out only because of the “best before” date limit.

Good idea is also to prepare the meal of the day (e.g. dinner after shopping) based on what we can find on the discounted section with products that are close to expire – it’s a win-win for all

Yes indeed, also I’m not aware if it’s available in your countries, but I use the ‘Too Good to Go’ app a lot. This is an app where stores, restaurants, bakers, etc. sell their left over food at the end of the day for a very small price. This is to prevent food waste + you have a budget friendly meal. Win win I would say 🙂

I wanted to say a few words about AECOM’s EAP programme and our experience as a family using it.

We reached out to the NHS helpline for mental health for one of my daughters who is struggling with anxiety and other issues. Two weeks later and we were still waiting for a call back, the NHS is an amazing institution but it’s quite clear that they are overwhelmed and under resourced especially in the mental health department.

I mentioned this to my line manager in passing and he mentioned the EAP programme. I called them and received a reply the same day to set up a meeting to discuss how the process works and to get a referral.

We had our first meeting with a Councillor within a week.

Just having the appointment was a huge weight off and hopefully the sessions will get the desired results.

I encourage anyone who is thinking about using the service to do so, it’s easy to do and it couldn’t be any quicker.

First step as always is asking for the help and when its so readily available it makes a hell of a difference.

We have 2 pear trees and we planted loads of squashes in the garden. They are all fairly easy to grow but are quite interesting to watch go through the stages of growth.
Last year, the pears were quite stressful because of volume of pears – we didn’t know what to do with them all. The squashes have also come earlier than expected because of the dry weather.
This year, we decided to donate our excess produce to the local food bank. I donated 36kg of food, 19kg of which were pears! We still have loads left and the pear trees do not look like we’ve taken anything off them! I emailed them to check they were happy with receiving fresh produce and they were more than happy to take it. The gardening is great for personal wellbeing. It’s a good physical task that can take your mind of anything else. Then it feels like an achievement to give the excess to people who need it. We grew the pumkins in a wildflower bed for the bees. The photo is the pumpkin patch with the wildflowers.

Investing in a home gym was the best decision I’ve ever made. Since working fully remote, often it is tough to get out of the house, especially going to the gym. I made a commitment to fully invest in a home gym so I wouldn’t have excuses on why I couldn’t go to the gym. If I brought the gym to my house, I would have no more excuses. My fitness, health and happiness has improved dramatically ever since investing in a home gym. I started out small, just buying some dumbbells. I have become borderline obsessed with fitness and turned my basement into a complete gym. My advice would be, if budget allows, to invest in a home gym, it’ll change your life.

My violin teacher passed away recently. I miss him dearly and think fondly of how inspiring of a human he was. Up until the day he passed, he was the epitome of well-being to me. At the age of 88, he still moved around comfortably, tended to his garden, and helped me grow as a musician and as a human. He was a long-time vegetarian and had given up on alcohol a long time ago. He lived and consumed in moderation, and really valued quality over quantity. He gave generously and was the leader of the Ethical Human Society in his neighborhood. Well-being is beyond just physical health. It is a state of balance and harmony of the physical body, emotion, intellect, wealth, and the world around us. Overall good health is a priority in our family. We were thrown a curveball when my youngest was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Luckily we were already practicing good eating habits, exercise, etc. so it was not a shocking adjustment to our diets, but there has been significant education for the family on portion control, types of food, trying more new things and timing of meals. The pediatric team has been great about staying positive with my son, reminding him he can still do & be anything he wants in life and sharing their stories. He has handled this life-altering news like a rock star (better than us) and we are learning from this rather than letting it drag us down. We are making a point to better all of our habits so that he keeps focus on his health in the future.

Key to my well-being is turning negative thoughts into positive actions, and adapting to whatever is thrown our way. Everyone has had their own struggles during the pandemic, on top of the everyday struggles we already had and sometimes it was hard to keep a positive frame of mind and keep walking on when there was no sign of light at the end of the tunnel.
Personally, 2020 was an incredibly hard year for me. I lost my mum suddenly just before the pandemic, and then had an operation cancelled due to lockdown and was left in severe pain for several months whilst waiting for a hospital to open up to surgery again. I wasn’t able to work my normal hours, or exercise, which is a staple for me for good mental well-being.
A friend and colleague gave me a book titled ‘Kind Word for Unkind Days; A Guide to Surviving and Thriving in Difficult Times’. This is a great book at helping you on days where you feel overwhelmed, lost, or frustrated. After I got the surgery, and lockdown restrictions ended, it was important to me to put up walls around the difficult times and move on with a positive mindset.
More recently I had a cycling accident and broke my arm, which again has restricted what I am able to do physically. I have struggled with not being able to go to yoga classes, which is a regular wellness check in for me, or keep up with my gym/running regime. However, I have tried to adapt to the situation – using dictation on my computer to reduce the amount of (slow!) typing, go for walks instead of runs, and try some modified yoga at home that doesn’t involve arms.
It is important to recognise what works for you in terms of emotional, physical and social well-being, but also important to have work-arounds for the times you aren’t able to access them for whatever reason.

When I was with my parents, I used to fight with my parents saying that my mother’s cooking was not good, pocket money was not enough and I didn’t like the home conditions.
After I left home for work. I realized how much I hurt my parents.
Staying in hostels, I realized how great my home was and after earning money, how hard my father earned it.
After I ate out I realized how well mom cooked. Every parent strives for a better life for their children. Many children like me fight with them without realizing their difficulties. An Emotional incident turned me Vegetarian..! Few months ago I visited a Cowshed near our Bangalore GDC office as it was an auspicious day. When visited I saw many cows and other animals either left there because they are not useful or found orphan. Clicked few photos of calves, feed food, donated something as a choice to keep them running this cause and came back. When I was going through the pics I realized these animals are often slaughtered to feed humans. And looking at those eyes found this is innocence. And I don’t have any reason to be non vegetarian. Since then I didn’t eat and I am sure I am vegetarian for life now. It’s everyone’s choice to choose what to eat, but this incident changed me for good.

The best piece of the lesson learned from my daughter!

A daughter is a treasure and blessing in my Life.
A daughter is a miracle that never ceases to be miraculous… full of beauty and forever beautiful… loving and caring and truly amazing
I remembered when I was stressed due to unavoidable circumstances in my work life and personal life. My life was fully demised due to every day created problems from the work life and got life-threatening situations. My life was covered with dark shadows, at that time my family also was not with me and stayed in a very stressful and miserable life. Suddenly, my little daughter came into my life and brought me lots of happiness in my life. She emotionally touches my heart with her smiles, emotions, cuteness, and giving happiness to me. Her existence in our life has been a blessing as her smile destresses me as well as brings joy to me. She is my only daughter and my little son and her lovely wife also supported me every time during this crucial period.
Family well-being occurs when all family members are safe, healthy, and have chances for educational advancement and economic mobility. Family relationships provide resources that can help an individual cope with stress, engage in healthier behaviors, and enhance self-esteem, leading to higher well-being.
Feelings of well-being are fundamental to the overall health of an individual, enabling them to successfully overcome difficulties and achieve what they want out of life. Past experiences, attitudes, and outlook can all impact well-being as can physical or emotional trauma following specific incidents.

Emotional Well-Being

A rich landowner named Carl often rode around his vast estate so he could congratulate himself on his great wealth. One day while riding around his estate on his favorite horse, he saw Hans, an old tenant farmer. Hans was sitting under a tree when Carl rode by.
Hans said, ‘I was just thanking God for my food.’

Carl protested, ‘If that is all I had to eat, I wouldn’t feel like giving thanks.’

Hans replied, ‘God has given me everything I need and I am thankful for it.’

The old farmer added, ‘It is strange you should come by today because I had a dream last night. In my dream a voice told me….The richest man in the valley will die tonight.’ I don’t know what it means, but I thought I ought to tell you.’

Carl snorted, ‘Dreams are nonsense,’ and galloped away, but he could not forget Hans’ words…The richest man in the valley will die tonight.

He was obviously the richest man in the valley, so he invited his doctor to his house that evening. Carl told the doctor what Hans had said. After a thorough examination, the doctor told the wealthy landowner, ‘Carl, you are as strong and healthy as a horse. There is no way you are going to die tonight.’

Nevertheless, for assurance, the doctor stayed with Carl, and they played cards through the night. The doctor left the next morning and Carl apologized for becoming so upset over the old man’s dream.

At about nine o’clock, a messenger arrived at Carl’s door.

‘What is it?’ Carl demanded.

The messenger explained, ‘It’s about old Hans. He died last night in his sleep.’

You don’t need money to be rich, be grateful for what you have in lire and you will feel happier.

This is my daughter, Giuliana. She is twelve (12) years old and is my inspiration for making healthier decisions. She recently competed in the 2022 US Track & Field Junior Olympics. Giuliana is my inspiration, because at 12, she understands that her body works best when you fuel it with healthy foods. When she craves sugar, she eats a fruit. She exercises every day, even when she’s not in competition mode (which is rare, she plays sports year-round). She has healthy sleep habits and ensures she gets her 8 hours in. She practices what doctors, nutritionists and coaches preach. So, if my 12 year old can do this, all while navigating middle school, why shouldn’t I make healthier choices everyday?

I hate Love Island, I can’t understand why anyone wants to watch people sun bathe, before you groan at me I know you either love or hate it. My daughter had the first episode on in the background whilst I was working from home, it wasn’t long before I finished work and was sitting with her asking questions. 8 long weeks have gone and we have refused to watch an episode unless we are together. We buy snacks, make drinks and look forward to watching each and every episode, screaming, shouting (mostly me) and discussing what is happening. We discuss at length what has happened and who will be voted off next and why. My middle daughter is 18 and I worried that now she was an adult that she would go her own way and I would lose touch with her. Turns out 18 year olds need as much attention as younger children. The time spent has brought us closer together, planning TV shows, days out etc. Best thing I did, my mental health has improved, my relationship has improved and my work life balance is even improving. Don’t get me wrong I still don’t know why Gemma is with Luca and I know Adam is playing a game and its only a TV show but………………………………………

The world gave me a ton of reason not to race, that early Sunday morning in June. When I signed up for the Pink String Sprinter Tri, I thought I’d do it with my best friend, but life happened and she couldn’t join. I also didn’t know it’d be the day after I got home from a week of road-tripping and moving my husband into his place in Michigan, where he has an internship for 6 months, thousands of miles away from our home in Austin. The alarm went off at 4:45 am and I wasn’t sure I could do it. I got there and set up my transition and realized I’d forgotten my helmet. Luckily the race coordinator had a spare for me. Then to really top it off, my kit busted when I went to the bathroom about 10 minutes before race time. I rushed back to transitions and had to safety pin it together. Any of those reasons could’ve stopped me, but I decided to race anyways. 300 yard swim, 10 mile bike, and 2.5 mile run. Even busted my knee in what would’ve been a very comical fall if anyone would’ve seen me. My time was not competitive at all, but my goal is only ever to not stop moving and to finish, and so I count it as a success. I know it’s cheesy, but I cried with pride when I crossed the finish line. It’s good to remind myself that I can do challenging (for me at least) things.

My friend Sam from university, who I then lived with in London, amazed me with his complete lack of FOMO (fear of missing out).

We were four 25 year olds, regaining the independence we had at Uni that we lost a bit when we each moved back home after graduation. Needless to say, the first three months we had parties, went out a lot, and generally reconnected.

I was always keen to go and have a beer, sometimes having to coerce the other three to do so. Two of them would start off saying “no, I’m not sure” and a few “oh, go on”s later from me and they would relent, even if they weren’t that bothered. Sam, however, would never be persuaded.

He had this relentless logical approach to his own life and his decision making (which sometimes led him astray on the relationship front, and the other three of us had to work hard to get him back on course). What this meant was that he was never persuaded to do something that he didn’t see a benefit from. It didn’t have to be a benefit for him though, but as long as there was a benefit. For example, there were times when I was struggling to adjust to living in London having just left a job that almost destroyed me. Even if he didn’t want to go on a walk and talk, or a chat at the pub, he knew I needed it that evening.

Anyway, he allowed us to try to persuade him, but would never come round to the idea if it meant he was wasting some time he could spend on something he did need to do or want to do. He was never rude or abrupt about it, just wished us a good night and did his own thing. Once we understood this about him, we knew to ask him once and accept the answer!

I guess, I’m saying that I tried to “be more Sam” after I found this out about him, and I cut out a lot of the wasted nights, and wasted time, and wasted money trying to chase those “uni night out” highs.

What I learned from him was to pick your battles, and ensure that your efforts will bring you, or someone else, a benefit. That is not to say you shouldn’t be altruistic or generous to others with your time, or do things you enjoy (because enjoyment is a benefit too), but constantly reassessing your goals and activities will help you ensure you are spending time and energy on endeavours that are worthwhile.

The story below had helped me know my own worth and which helps me boost my confidence on my skills in both my personal life and professional life as well. It also helps leadership team in asssesment of individual efforts in thier team.

A sweet and short story of “Intellectual Well-Being” :

To cross a river, a man once had to travel by boat. Luckily he came to see a fisherman with a small boat ready to go across the river. A man approached the fisherman and asked him to help him cross the river. The fisherman agreed to help him and they started their journey. In the middle of the river, the man asked the fisherman whether he knew how to do the math. The fisherman replied I have no knowledge of math. Then the man laughed at him and said I am an expert in math. I have achieved many medals, and I have earned a lot of money in my life with all the knowledge I have. He is extremely proud of the knowledge and skills he has. Then he sarcastically asked the fisherman if he knew anything about science. The poor fisherman politely replied, ” Sir! I have no knowledge of science Since I haven’t been to school for my studies”, and he said that “All I know is fishing and riding a boat”, The man laughed again and said you have not put efforts into learning anything in your life. Keeping quiet, the fisherman rode his boat.

After some time, the flow of the river suddenly increased and the boat was unable to remain still in the water. The fisherman was trying his best to get control of the boat but he failed due to the heavy flow of water.

Then the fisherman jumped into the river and asked him one question “Sir! Can you swim?”.

The egoistic highly educated man screamed in fear to the fisherman,
“I didn’t learned how to swim, please save my life from this sinking boat Sir!!!”

My friend had booked a hiking trip into Banff earlier in the year. I was super nervous about going as I had switched to canoeing from hiking a few years ago after developing a foot injury. I had all the intentions of training to prepare my body for the pack that would sustain me for the three days in the backcountry but right up until a few days before the hike I knew I hadn’t done enough. My real purpose was to share this magical location with my husband who had never been there before. I went through my pack one last time at the trailhead parking lot, removing items that I thought I wouldn’t need to lighten my pack. Within a few minutes the five of us were hiking along a well defined trail through the forest. After about a kilometer, the trail started to climb. It was about 28 deg C and so I knew the only way I would make it was to pace myself. One foot after the other, stopping on occasion to dunk our hats in a few streams that crossed the trail. My husband had a GPS watch and kept us updated on our progress – another 20 m of elevation gain, another 100 m of trail behind us. After 6 km and over 500 m of elevation gain I saw the trees starting to clear ahead and knew from the wetness of the trail that we were approaching the lake outfall. Within 100 m we emerged from the trees and boggy meadows to a stunning torquoise lake, surrounded by limestone peaks laced with snow. After some rest in the tent and cooling my head with a wet bandana soaked in the lake, I joined my husband and friends for some well earned snacks and reveled in nature’s beauty. I had done it. One step at a time!

This is one of my favourite ones which I drummed into my children when they were little to the point they roll their eyes now – but it helps develop a growth mindset in children. Instead of thinking “I can’t do that” teach them to think “What if I can” and then they try it and see.

I try to go on a daily walk to get physical exercise and relieve stress. In May i was out on my daily walk and passed a pile of garbage only to see a small head pop out of it. It was a little puppy, scared and skinny with his ribs sticking out. I came back with a car and lured him out of the garbage. He was dehydrated and hungry but quickly felt much better. Now he has settled into his new home and I have a companion for my daily walks. 🙂

After having several allergic/intolerant reactions to several random foods, including a Solero ice cream, I thought the best thing to do would be to take an intolerance test. Upon receiving my results, I found that I was intolerant to many of the foods that I love, including most gluten and dairy based products, peanuts, tomatoes and some fish. On top of this I also have an egg allergy. I have sought the help of doctors who are in the process of booking me for formal tests, as well as seeking nutrition advice from my personal trainer, where we have collaborated to come up with a nutrition plan. Since making these changes to my diet, I feel happier and healthier in myself, and much more comfortable in my own skin!

Health is Precious than anything, but are we giving enough Importance?
No..No..No..No…Answer will be same in any voice, only variation is gender/age/region
Where are we missing to say Yes? Our own choices, Yes we miss this by choosing the option which will pave the path to Unhealthy life. Will try to touch few areas in which our choice plays a key role and always there is a link to other activity we do,
Few Months back it was a regular day, i started with but my body did not accepted as regular day and started behaving differently, sudden weakness giddiness etc. followed by diagnosis and laboratory results and it landed with high triglycerides and high cholesterol then i have changed the choices

A. Choice of getting in to bed?
Most of us are choosing late night activities
*Minimum 7 Hrs quality sleep is a key for Healthy Life
*We should welcome sun into our day but not sun forcing us to wake up
*Hours spent for sleeping after 11.00 PM & After 6.00 AM have a derating factor of 3, as we are basically animals and our body function is related to Sunrise & Sunset
*Means if a person sleep at 12.30 & wakes at 7.30, the effective sleep is considered as 4+3/3=5 Hrs
3 Hrs fall in the slot(After 11.00 + after 6.00) which has derating factor , short of 2 hrs

B. Choice of aligning with Nature?
*Most of us are choosing Electronic Gadgets(Laptops/mobile/TV/tab/home appliances/vehicles etc.) as our best buddy
*Human body was designed to live with Nature but not above
*Minimum 30 mins in a day, if we spend with nature that will enhance our calmness, peace of mind followed by health. We are not batteries to recharge with electric power, we will get recharge with quality time with family or nature
*Nature means could be any Naturally obtained thing, breeze in balcony/plants & trees around us, sun rise, sky, stars, pet animals etc.

C. Choice of involving in physical activities
* Most of us are choosing burning fuel for every thing we have to buy from market(online food partners), this is totally isolating from social interactions
* There are many things we can segregate and take them from market in the morning walks
* Body is not like a machine unlike unused items/parts can be run by adding more lubricants, human body need warm up on daily basis to be in active mode. Only 25-28% of the muscles in the body are used for the activities in urban life, We can energize the whole body with simple 12 -13 exercises in 40 mins at home

D. Choice of using spices in food habits
* Most of us are choosing daily food without essential spices
* We are blessed with variety of spices available in every corner of market, but unfortunately using artificial flavors which are appetizing to eat often miss out on the essential nutrients required.
Try to add enough natural spices in food, In simple words its prevention better than cure(falling sick)

Health is Precious than anything, but are we giving enough Importance?
Yes…Yes…Yes…Answer will be same in any voice, only variation is gender/age/region If we made our CHOICES better

Few Unhealthy choices are irreversible so please take cautious steps while choosing the options in hand

I am feeling much better and all my reports are good!

Overall Well-being

I have led an active life since my school days. Even in college, I used to be a good athlete. I used to play basketball, hockey, and football for the college team. My ultimate aim was to be as fit as I could be at that time. Then, I started working in the year 2019, and life got busy, but I still played basketball and sometimes football in the evenings and went trekking with my friends on weekends.

However, in 2020, we all struggled with the COVID-2019 pandemic, and I too lost my persistent nature towards fitness. I tried to continue some physical activities (home workouts) but was unable to due to a lack of a fixed routine and dedication, so I became a lazy person with no hobbies. That was a period of dissatisfaction with my mental, physical and emotional state.

After that, I took command of my life. I started waking up at around 6 in the morning, followed by meditation for 15-20 minutes, and then some physical activities for approximately 30 minutes. These exercises helped me grow physically and mentally and greatly helped me on the emotional front. In the evening, I started a habit of going to a temple and sitting there patiently for 10 minutes. I also gained some interest in religious texts and spiritual growth, and I like to read related books, which helped me immensely on the spiritual front.

Sometimes I go out with my friends and play online games with them for relaxation. All of these things made me who I am today and are slowly moulding me to be better in the future. I am content with my growth on the physical, mental, social and spiritual fronts.

Currently, I am on this journey toward overall fitness. It might take some time but I am moving forward and that’s all that matters!

Since the end of February of 2022, the world has been shifting right in front of my eyes due to the invasion of Russia to Ukraine. Living in Poland, and my partner being of Ukranian origins, the pressure and constant uncertainty is part of our daily lives. Before this year I used to take care of my physical health by strength training at the gym; not even the pandemic got in my way for this, I continued to do home work-outs and biking trips when allowed. Due to the war and the notorious economical impact it has had in this part of the world, I slowly and unconsciously began to neglect sport, a very important part of my life, which I later realized did not only help my body but my also my mind.

I started working at AECOM in June of 2022. Many would agree that changing your job would be a good moment to also put the rest of your life together. Well, it has been only a couple of months and I cannot say that I have it all put together just yet, but thanks to the benefits that AECOM offers, I have been able to slowly get back on track with my physical journey. I did not only come back to strength training, but I have added yoga to my activities and I can already feel my body and mind being thankful for this. Movement and sport are my ways of connecting with my mind and communicate with myself. These ways give me peace of mind, which then gives me mental strength to continue dealing with the inevitable outside world. I am very grateful to AECOM for reminding me of my physical well-being and for offering benefits that pave the way.

This could sound like an scripted AECOM ad coming from HR, but I want you, the reader, to believe that I am being my most sincere self with every single word in this story.

I’ve always felt like an outsider. Growing up, I just felt different from my peers; I didn’t understand things they understood, and we rarely shared interests. As a result, I experienced a large amount of social isolation. It seemed like I was going through life without any legitimate friends, or any sense of belonging to a group. Reflecting on my social situation made me feel like I wasn’t “worth it” — that my feelings were invalid, my dreams were impossible, and I was destined to be alone for a long time.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, these feelings of loneliness intensified — and my social isolation was magnified under quarantine policies. This proved to be very unhealthy; my mental health deteriorated, and my emotional state was worse than ever. It was then that I realized I needed to start healing and working on myself.
My healing began with work on accepting myself for who I am. I started by being more open with the few, distant friends I had, explaining my real feelings and struggles to them. When I told them, they became much more supportive and understanding of my view of the world. Their support ended up being a huge part of my healing process. I also began to take part in my interests and hobbies more, particularly musical theater, drawing and writing. I even began to write out story ideas over time. I met a number of new people through my writing, thanks to social media allowing us to talk, and I was able to share my work with them. These new people became new friends, most of which I’ve been able to maintain contact with for the past two years.
Above all, I’ve been trying to maintain a more positive self-image, as I’ve come to learn loving myself is the key to establishing secure connections in my life, because, at the end of the day, people do like me. I have friends that want to spend time with me. Tapping into these positives and bolstering my self-confidence is a responsibility that I must maintain.
Ultimately, loving myself has gotten a little easier. It’s been a long road, and there are still a lot of miles left to travel. But someday, if I just keep going, I’ll get there. I just need to keep going, because every day, it feels a little closer.

From my youth in the Adirondack Park tagging along with my father, a forester and expert dendrologist, to my graduate studies, and my profession as an vegetation ecologist, plants have long been an important part of my life. I’ve found that my sense of place and well-being are intimately tied to knowing the plants around me, and helping others appreciate the amazing diversity of plants. This was a driving force for why I’ve volunteered as treasurer on the board of directors for the Alaska Native Plant Society for the past 2 years, and recently agreed to continue on for another 2 year term. Through this I’ve found a community who shares my love of plants, made great friends, and become engaged in an organization where my passion for plants and education can truly blossom.

Smiling affects not just yourself, but also the people around you. In a 2002 study, Swedish researchers found that people tend to mirror the facial expressions they see. Participants found it easier to smile when exposed to images of smiles; the same effect was observed for frowns. Humans are wired to respond in kind because of mirror neurons, brain cells that fire both when we perform an action and observe the same action performed before us. (This explains why smiles are indeed contagious.)

Physical Well-Being

Ever made a new years resolution and failed at it 3 days later? I hear you!
I made a resolution to do push-ups in the morning every day and to increase the number as it got easier. So I started with 15 push ups. Not too hard.
The next day I did 20. Great, I’m making progress. Each day I was increasing my personal best.
30. Yes!
40. Super!
50. Oh man, I’m superman!
60. My name is Arnold!
I got up to 70 at one point. And then all that success came crashing down.
Even though I could do 70 push ups in one go, it still hurt like a @$%^&#! So the next morning, when I was supposed to do 70 or more push ups (because reducing that number would be failure, right?), I thought of how painful it was going to be. Suddenly my motivation dropped and I decided to change my resolution on-the-fly.
“My body needs rest” I thought. “Nothing wrong with a rest day”.
So I tumbled down the slippery slope of putting things off. I put it off for one day. The next day I found that I didn’t have time, because I slept in. The next something else came up. And that was the last time I did push-ups for a while.

I decided, I needed a strategy to overcome this deadly cycle. Next time I set my push-up goals, I had two goals: A personal best, and a minimum goal. For example, I would aim to do at least 20, even if I could squeeze out 40. That way, on a good day, I can squeeze out 40 or even 45, making a new personal best. But on a bad day, or when I don’t have much time to spare, I can drop and do 20 push-ups. I’ve met my goal of 20, so it’s a success, even if I didn’t beat my personal best. Something is better than nothing. I did some physical activity. And since 20 push ups are so easy for me to do, I won’t ever be able to find an excuse not to do them!

Lesson: Don’t make the perfect the enemy of the good.
Beating your personal best is perfect. But doing a few push-ups is still good. The only failure is doing nothing at all.

Since joining AECOM, I’ve taken inspiration from AECOM’s focus on inclusivity and well-being across planet and started a regular regimen of cycling the 18K round trip to-and-from work on most days of the week. Upon arrival, I take a few minutes to catch up on correspondence, grab a cup of tea, cool down and the take advantage of the excellent change/shower facility at Quarry Park to start my day fresher than ever before. When I return home in the evening (ok… maybe it’s late afternoon) I have fully decompressed from my workday routine and am 100% in the moment when I greet my family.

By joining AECOM and changing my commuting habits, I’ve reduced my carbon footprint by more than 5 tonnes per year. Definitely a win-win-win emotionally, physically and environmentally.

Fresh food as opposed to processed products holds the key. If it sits on a shelf, question if it holds any value, nice tip Marwan.

Beauty of Joint Family
In India, a joint family is usually a large undivided family where members of more than one generation live together under one roof (grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, and their children).
Growing up with cousins, uncles, aunts, and grandparents gives the opportunity to connect with children learn to share, care for everyone and respect everyone.
The joint family is a beautiful institution—most of us our generation have grown up listening to this idea and believing in it as well. where everyone eats together, laughs together, supports each other during both good and bad times.
For working parents, who need someone trustworthy to be around their children. Uncles, aunts, or grandparents around, their children who care for children and have their best interest in mind, parents feel less worried. More emotional support and source of entertainment in a joint family
All the earning family members contribute to the common fund for household expenses. This system also acts as a security net. When a member suffers monetary loss or loss of job.

I like the idea of a “Joint Family”. After all, you should be able to live with your close family and enjoy them, rather than visiting them on holidays. Cool stuff!

Replace "should" in your wellbeing vocabulary with words like "want" or "choose". e.g. "I want to become fitter" indicates positive action from within, "should" is an expectation, often external. Add a comment

On 4th April I embarked on a weight loss and exercise regime ( 3weeks) to lose some weight for upcoming holiday to Bali. I managed to lose 5kgs for that trip and put on two coming back. Since then I have been impacted by a marriage ending and subsequent separation. With that event came a change in mindset, change in diet and increase in my physical exercise. The benefits are a loss of just under 10kgs, 88.3kgs to 78.7kgs and a much healthier Zoran, a much more calm mind and a relaxed mindset. Looking forward to a fitter and happier future despite the challenges.
